Graphic Arts Academy

PROJECT: Graphic Arts Academy
LOCATION: Copenhagen, Denmark  |  SIZE: 20,000 sf
STUDIO: DIS Architectural Design Studio
PROFESSOR: Susanne Andersen
DATE: Spring 2004

DESCRIPTION: Urban infill project for a Graphic Arts Academy on a fifty-meter by fifteen-meter site located in the heart of medieval Copenhagen. Programmatic requirements included studios, lobby and exhibition space, an auditorium, faculty offices, a library, and a faculty residence.
The curved form of the building is inspired by the surrounding buildings at the intersection. The façade system is composed of laminated wood panels faced with copper sheeting on the exterior surface, indexing the widespread use of copper as a decorative material on the historic buildings of Copenhagen. The placement of the panels along the curved façade creates a dynamic visual effect upon approach, as varying degrees of the interior are revealed or concealed as the viewer moves around the site.
